He’d moved back to Nashville to become an activist and journalist. “If you want to effect change you have to do it yourself,” he told me. In a 2003 letter to the Tennessean, Friedmann wrote that “Hall should be commended for taking steps to ensure a safe and humane environment at the jail.”
